| talkSPORT Station History From Talk Radio UK to talkSPORT January: James Max and George Galloway are given new shows on the talkSPORT weekend schedule following the death of Mike Dickin. Galloway takes over Dickin’s slot between 10:00pm-1:00am on Friday and Saturday evening with him continuing to present on Sunday between 8:00pm-10:00pm. Max becomes the presenter of the 8:00pm-10:00pm slot on Saturday evening for the next few months. Chris Cooper leaves the station to join 105.4 Century FM in Manchester to be part of their coverage of Manchester United. At talkSPORT, Cooper reported and commentated on a number of matches from the Premiership, FA Cup, Carling Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup as well as the 2006 World Cup in Germany where he was alongside Gary Stevens in the commentary box. The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast also reaches a weekly audience of 1,046,000 listeners. talkSPORT announce the signing of Ian Wright to co-present Drive alongside Adrian Durham from Monday to Thursday afternoon. Replacing Micky Quinn, who stood-in on the show following the departure of Rodney Marsh in October 2006, Wright says: I cannot wait to get on the air and tell it like it is to the talkSPORT listeners.” talkSPORT Programme Director Bill Ridley says: “We are really excited to have Ian on board at talkSPORT. He is very passionate about the game and will be given free rein to air his views on the important issues that football faces in this country.” Budget Van Insurance sign a deal with talkSPORT to sponsor the Hawksbee & Jacobs show having previously sponsored the mid-morning phone-in, originally with Ian Collins, now hosted by Jon Gaunt. March: talkSPORT sign Garry Bushell as the new presenter of the 8:00pm-10:00pm show each Sunday evening replacing George Galloway, who continues to present on Friday and Saturday night. The James Max Show is dropped from the schedule in favour of a new show hosted by Rhodri Williams each Saturday between 8:00pm-10:00pm. The Saturday Sports Quiz, which is sponsored by Microsoft Live Search, gives away cash prizes and electrical gadgets such as cameras, computers and televisions. talkSPORT appoint sports journalist Mark Donaldson as their Scottish Football Correspondent, although he will be working primarily for Talk 107 in Edinburgh. Donaldson, who has gained over 10 years experience in covering Scottish Football for EMAP stations Forth 1 and Forth 2, joins Talk 107 in May to become the station’s Sports Editor and to lead their sports news output across the week. In addition to his role at Talk 107, Donaldson will also broadcast reports on the Scottish Premier League, Scottish FA Cup and football news from Scotland in general on talkSPORT. April: talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil continues to be linked with a role with Setanta Sports, who are covering live Premiership matches from August. May: talkSPORT record their highest ever audience share in the latest RAJAR figures. talkSPORT's audience figures are up 13.1% year-on-year and up 3.3% quarter-on-quarter giving the station a reach of 2.3m listeners. The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast reach an audience of 1,046,000 listeners every week. However, audience figures for Q1 of 2007 are slightly down compared to the previous quarter and stand at 1,034,000 listeners. talkSPORT broadcast extensive coverage of Chelsea v Manchester United in the FA Cup Final with a number of outside broadcasts. June: talkSPORT introduce a new studio phone number replacing the current 08704 20 20 20 number. The new 08717 22 33 44 number, which is introduced on Wednesday 6th June, is the third number used by talkSPORT since the station launched in 2000. talkSPORT broadcast live coverage from the UEFA Under 21 Championship in Holland in matches involving England. Commentary is provided by Nigel Pearson and Ian Danter alongside Jason Cundy and Alvin Martin. Keith Arthur and Nigel Botherway present a special edition of Fisherman’s Blues on Saturday 16th June between 12:00am-8:00am to celebrate the beginning of the fishing season. talkSPORT sign a deal with the IRB to become an “official broadcaster” of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. However, the station announces that broadcast updates and reports from matches rather than full live commentaries. The rights enable the station to be able to broadcast from inside each of the stadia, including the Millennium Stadium and Murrayfield, as well as player interviews and broadcasts in the host cities. Lisa Francesca “Chessy” Nand steps down from her role as co-presenter of The Late Night Ian Collins Show after fourteen months with the station. Nand says: “I have had a great time doing the overnight show with Ian and it has been a fantastic stage in my career. We have had really good fun and I have made a lot of friends with the listeners, who I will miss." Former talkSPORT weekend presenter Charlie Wolf announces that he has been diagnosed with kidney cancer, but is expected to make a full recovery. talkSPORT confirm the signing of former Essex CCC captain Ronnie Irani has the new co-presenter of The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast from September. Replacing Graham Beecroft, Irani says: “I cannot wait to start. I’ve worked with Alan Brazil before on the station and we had a brilliant chemistry on air. I love my sport, not just cricket, so to get the chance to talk about and express a view on football, rugby, tennis, and any sport in fact, has massive appeal and I cannot think of a better place to do it than talkSPORT.” July: talkSPORT dominate the 2007 Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards picking up four prizes, including the ‘Station of the Year ‘and ‘The Gold Award’. Programme Director Bill Ridley also won ‘Programmer of the Year’ and the station also won ‘The Technical Innovation Award’ for broadcasting the station in Germany during the World Cup in 2006. On receiving ‘The Gold Award’ on behalf of talkSPORT, Managing Director Scott Taunton said: "I would like to congratulate my friends and colleagues at talkSPORT for this unprecedented show of recognition from our industry peers. To the best of my knowledge, no station has ever walked away with four awards. It's a fantastic result for all of those involved with the station." OFCOM announce that Talk Radio is to return to the airwaves from July 2008 following the award of the second national digital radio licence to 4 Digital Radio who will be providing a ten-station line-up from July 2008 consisting of: E4 Radio, Channel 4 Radio, Pure 4, Closer, Sky News Radio, Virgin Radio Viva, Original and the return of Talk Radio to the national airwaves. talkSPORT broadcasts live commentary of The 136th Open Championship from Carnoustie. Rhodri Williams presents talkSPORT's live coverage from Carnoustie beginning on Wednesday 18th July with The Golf Show: Open Championship Preview. talkSPORT's commentary team of Rupert Bell, Robert Lee, Richard Boxall, Mark Donaldson, Mike Bovill and Bob Bubka lead with full coverage of the biggest golf tournament of the year. Lembit Opik, Paul “Tonks” Tonkinson, Ian Collins, Dominik Diamond and John Nichol fill-in for James Whale from Sunday 22nd July until Wednesday 25th July. Myleene Klass and Melinda Messenger were also scheduled to present shows but pulled out at the last minute. talkSPORT reveal their Saturday afternoon line-up for the start of the 2007-2008, which includes live commentary from a Premiership fixture. Adrian Durham returns to Saturday afternoon on Matchday Live alongside Alan Brazil of The Sports Breakfast. Nigel Pearson and Alvin Martin are confirmed as the regular commentary team from the day’s live Premiership commentary. Nigel Pearson and Alvin Martin commentate on Sam Allardyce’s return to the Reebok Stadium for Bolton v Newcastle on Saturday 11th August. Setanta Sports sign talkSPORT’s Final Whistle presenter Patrick Kinghorn to co-present their coverage of the Blue Square Premier League. After several years with the station, Gabriele Marcotti leaves talkSPORT to join BBC Radio Five Live to co-present the Friday night preview show alongside Mark Pougatch and Steve Claridge. Speaking about his departure, he said: “It's good-bye with a heavy heart and very big thank you to everyone at talkSPORT. And, of course, to those who listened in and supported me, ensuring that I would be kept around all those years.” talkSPORT's audience figures are up 6.9% year-on-year and up 1.3% quarter-on-quarter giving the station a reach of 2.4m listeners and an audience share of 1.8%. Figures are also released for The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast giving the show a weekly audience of 1,027,000 listeners. Drive with Adrian Durham and Ian Wright has an audience of 859,000 listeners representing a rise of 9% compared with the previous quarter. talkSPORT are found to be in breach of OFCOM rules after presenters Mike Mendoza and Garry Bushell made anti-gay and homophobic remarks. Following complaints made to OFCOM regarding separate comments from Mendoza and Bushell on talkSPORT, the regulatory body of the industry investigated several listeners claims regarding anti-gay and homophobic remarks made on-air. The station is found in to be in breach of OFCOM’s Rule 2.3 which forbids the use of offensive material that includes discriminatory treatment or language “on the grounds of age, disability, gender, race, religion, beliefs and sexual orientation”. Andrew Pierce and Carole Malone, John Nichol, Boris Johnson MP and Lord John Taylor of Warwick fill-in for James Whale from Monday 3rd September until Thursday 6th September. September: Gary Bushell’s short tenure at talkSPORT comes to an end and is replaced in the Sunday night slot between 8:00pm-10:00pm with The Rugby World Cup Show with Rhodri Williams, Will Carling and David Campese. A new permanent show to replace Bushell is to be announced in October. talkSPORT secure broadcast rights to Champions League matches involving Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Their first live commentary matches are FC Porto v Liverpool and Sporting Lisbon v Manchester United on Tuesday 18th September and Wednesday 19th September respectively. The station introduces a new early-breakfast show between 5:00am-6:00am on weekday mornings. The Incredibily Early Breakfast Show with Ian Collins looks at the morning headlines with Faye Carruthers and Ian Abrahams and builds-up to The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. October: talkSPORT make a number of changes to the Sunday schedule axing The Sunday Session with Rhodri Williams and Jason Cundy and permanently replaces the departed Garry Bushell. Ian Danter becomes the new host on Sunday afternoon with Football First alongside Alvin Martin and Jason Cundy between 12:00pm-5:00pm meaning that The Final Whistle with Patrick Kinghorn and Ray Houghton begins one hour later. Rhodri Williams is scheduled to present The Rugby Show with Will Carling and Jeff Probyn between 8:00pm-10:00pm reviewing the weekend’s rugby union fixtures. The latest audience figures are released showing talkSPORT enjoying an increase of 2.0% year-on-year but down 2.5% quarter-on-quarter giving the station a reach of 2.3m listeners each week. The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast is up 92,000 listeners year-on-year and 64,000 listeners quarter-on-quarter giving them a weekly audience of 1,091,000 listeners. November: UTV Radio appoint BBC Radio Five Live Commissioning Editor Moz Dee to the position of Programme Director replacing the retiring Bill Ridley in the New Year. In his new role Dee will be responsible for programming at talkSPORT and UTV Radio’s new digital station Talk Radio. On his appointment, he says: "The opportunity to work with UTV, talkSPORT and the new Talk Radio station was too good to resist. UTV is a dynamic commercial operation and Talk is a fantastic product. I look forward to contributing to their continued growth and success. On a personal note, I would like to congratulate Bill on his retirement. Under his guidance, talkSPORT has become a major force in broadcasting and I wish him all the best.” talkSPORT are censured by OFCOM after George Galloway used his show to attack a potential political opponent in MP Jim Fitzpatrick. OFCOM said it stopped short of applying a sanction, which could have included a fine or the requirement to broadcast a summary of its findings, because it was talkSPORT’s first impartiality breach: “Nevertheless, the broadcaster should be aware that similar significant failure to ensure compliance with the due impartiality requirements will result in the consideration of further regulatory action." talkSPORT announces that it has dropped the annual Clash of the Titans show from the Christmas schedule for the first time since the station launched in 2000. On hearing the announcement, one listener said: “The Clash of the Titans hasn’t been good for the last few years and I didn’t even bother listening to it last year because of the lack of different views on the show. Surely if you have someone like Jon Gaunt on the show you have to include George Galloway? Instead we got James Whale and Mike Parry. How boring!” December: talkSPORT are found to be in breach of OFCOM regulations for the second time in a month after a promotional trailer was broadcast featuring the phrase “mother-crushers”. OFCOM received a complaint from one listener believing they had instead heard the phrase “mother-fuckers” during a trail for promotional trailer for The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on a daytime programme on talkSPORT. 2008: The Return of Talk Radio & Moz Dee January: It is announced that Russ Williams of Virgin Radio is to replace Kelly Dalglish as presenter of the Monday night Kick-Off show alongside Jason Cundy.
