talkSPORT Station History
From Talk Radio UK to talkSPORT

January: At the start of the year, talkSPORT revamp their drivetime show, with The Season Ticket with Tom Watt being replaced by former Kickabout presenters Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs between Monday and Thursday. Tom Watt would remain on the station as a presenter of his Friday night drivetime show The Weekend Starts Here and alongside co-host Michael Hann on the Saturday pre-match show It’s Round and It’s White between 11:00am-2:00pm on talkSPORT.

Later that month, talkSPORT announce that The Sports Breakfast will finally be presented by a permanent duo. It is announced that
Mike Parry will present the show alongside Alan Brazil on a full-time basis. Due to his replacement on drivetime, Tom Watt decides to leave the station in order to join BBC LDN as their main football presenter. Due to his departure, and Hawksbee & Jacobs going five days a week at drivetime, a number of new shows are brought into the weekday evening schedule: Adrian Durham is topresent two new shows with him presenting Football First in Europe alongside Gabriele Marcotti and Guillem Balague and Football First Nationwide League alongside Ray Houghton.

February: With Rob Wotton leaving the station to work exclusively as a Sky Sports News presenter, talkSPORT golf correspondent reporter Richard Kaufman is brought in to present the Afternoon Sportzone.

March: talkSPORT provide live coverage on England’s Winter Test and One Day International series with Sri Lanka, with commentary provided by the talkSPORT at the Test team of Geoffrey Boycott, Mark Nicholas, Chris Cowdrey, Chris Broad, Jack Bannister and Bob Woolmer, with reports by Andrew McKenna. The coverage includes Chris Cowdrey commentating from off of the back of an elephant during England’s win of the Second Test in Kandy. England win the test series 2-0 but lose the one day series 3-0.

April: talkSPORT snatch exclusive radio rights to broadcast all Chelsea, Fulham and Tottenhamgames from Capital FM and Capital Gold London. The games will be broadcast on the 1089am frequency to London and the South-East region, and Jim Proudfoot and Alvin Martin are selected as the primary Football First Premiership Live commentary team.

talkSPORT and producers Transworld International win the Silver Award in the Event category at the 2001 Sony Radio Awards for talkSPORT at The Open Championship, as it brought “a fresh new approach to golf commentary which brought the game alive for a younger audience.” talkSPORT's team of presenters
Andy Gray, Richard Kaufman, Richard Boxall and Robert Lee, contributors Bob Bubka, Rupert Bell and Sarah Sanderson, and producers Carolyn Smith and Michael Wilson are all honoured as part of the only Sony Award talkSPORT have won to date.

May: Former ITV Voice Of Football Brian Moore broadcasts the last show of his career, as the current series of Inside The Boardroom ends at the end of the football season. It is replaced by The Afternooon Sportzone with Richard Kaufman between 2:00pm-4:00pm and now broadcasts five days a week.

Due to ill-health and also due to the ITV Sports Channel’s newly acquired coverage of the Nationwide Football League, on which he’d be working as a producer,
Gary Newbon leaves his position as the presenter of Saturday night football phone-in 505 at the end of the season. Breakfast duo Alan Brazil and Mike Parry, and then Bill Young replace him on the station's flagship football phone-in over the summer between 5:00pm-8:00pm on talkSPORT.

Following on from the European Broadcasting Union selling both the TV and radio rights to the World Cup qualifier between Greece and England to the BBC on an exclusive basis, talkSPORT complain to the Office of Fair Trading, arguing that the “bundling” of TV and radio rights is illegal and by doing this the BBC had abused their market position. A talkSPORT spokesman said “I believe they offered to sell them to us. But they are not theirs to sell." talkSPORT owner
Kelvin MacKenzie went further by claiming “We’re determined not to be cut out of the bidding by the BBC’s dirty tricks department.”

Due to this dispute, talkSPORT, who usually cover all England internationals with live and official commentary, turned down a share of the rights and covered the match by watching television monitors, however unlike they did in Euro 2000, the stations commentary team of
Alan Parry and Alvin Martin explained to their listeners at regular intervals that the coverage was unofficial and that they were not broadcasting from the stadium in Greece. talkSPORT also offered advertisers the opportunity to sponsor goals from England’s 2-0 win.

July: talkSPORT provide live coverage of the British Lions tour of Australia, with commentary on the three match series against Australia. Presenter Chris Broad, commentators John Taylor and Gavin Hastings and reporter Dom McGuinness are the talkSPORT team covering Australia’s 2-1 series victory.

August: Like they did the previous year, talkSPORT also make a number of changes to their weekend schedule. On Saturday, live Premiership football comes to talkSPORT, as Football First Premiership Live with Jim Proudfoot and Alvin Martin airs between 2:40pm-5:00pm on talkSPORT 1089am in London and the South-East region. Nationally, Ray Houghton replaces Alvin Martin on Football First with Adrian Durham, with Football First Early Kick-Off with Graham Beecroft and Ian St John replacing It’s Round And It’s White. Lawrie McMenemy is selected as the new presenter of the station’s flagship football phone-in 505, although Adrian Durham is soon put in place to present the show with him.

A number of changes are also made to the Sunday schedule.
Ian St John and Graham Beecroft on The Saint & Beeky replace Call The Doc with Geoff Peters and the departing Tommy Docherty. Another man to be leaving the station is Jeremy Nicholas, who’s Sunday Sports Quiz is replaced by 605 with football commentator Steve Bower. Having recently come second in the London Mayoral elections, former Conservative MP Steve Norris is to present on Sunday nights between 10:00pm-1:00am.

September: Saturday September 1st is a mixed day for talkSPORT. The station provides full live commentary on England’s crucial 2002 World Cup Qualifier with Germany in Munich, as Alan Parry and Alvin Martin commentate on England historic 5-1 win. However, later that night it is announced that football commentary legend and former Inside The Boardroom presenter Brian Moore had died. He was 69.

On Tuesday September 11th, talkSPORT, and in particular presenters
Richard Kaufman and Mike Parry, receive a huge amount of praise for the way in which they covered the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. The full schedule for the historic day looked like this:

This move comes after a number of cost cutting measures are made at TWG, which include a number of staff members being let go and two of the groups local radio stations being sold off.

December: talkSPORT provide live coverage of England’s Winter Test Series in India. The talkSPORT at the Test team of Geoffrey Boycott, Mark Nicholas, Chris Cowdrey, Chris Broad, Jack Bannister and Bob Woolmer provide commentary on England’s 1-0 series win, and 3-3 ODI draw the following month.
