Glasgow born Ray Houghton is a Liverpool and Republic of Ireland legend with manager Kenny Dalglish signing him from Oxford United for £800,000 in 1987, and he played a pivotal midfield role in what is considered to be one of the best Reds sides to ever grace Anfield.

Ray was the final piece in the jigsaw for Dalglish’s wonderful 1987-1988 championship winning Liverpool side, which featured a forward line of Peter Beardsley, John Barnes and John Aldridge. Healso played in the 1989 FA Cup win over Everton at Wembley only for the Reds to be denied a double again, this time by Arsenal in a dramatic last game at Anfield. Ray was a workaholic who always gave 100 per cent and could score goals, create goals and never gave defenders a moments peace.

Ray left Liverpool in 1992 and after life at Anfield, he went on to produce good performances for Villa, winning a League Cup winners medal in 1994, and played in the 1994 World Cup in the USA, where he scored in the opening 1-0 defeat of Italy. After a short spell at Reading, Ray went on to coach at Crystal Palace.

Following his retirement from playing, Ray became a football agent before becoming assistant manager at Crystal Palace. On leaving Palace, Ray’s media career has gone from strength to strength, and he now regularly appears on talkSPORT and provides football commentary for various TV and radio stations including Sky Sports, Channel Five and Today FM in the Republic of Ireland. He is regular on Evening Kick-Off every Tuesday with Danny Kelly between 7:00pm-10:00pm and on Sunday Matchday Live every weekend with Ian Danter and Alvin Martin between 2:00pm-7:00pm on talkSPORT.
